A practical post-work guide

After-builders cleaning checklist: what to do when building work ends

Post-work cleaning is most effective when the trades have finished, the space is safe and the cleaning scope reflects the dust, new finishes and rooms actually affected.

This checklist helps Wolverhampton homeowners and property clients prepare for an accurate quote. After-builders cleaning is cleaning work; it is not rubble removal, hazardous-material handling, snagging or repair.

1 · Confirm trade handover

Wait until dust-producing work is complete.

  • Confirm cutting, sanding, drilling and plaster work have stopped
  • Ask trades to remove tools, coverings and their waste
  • Make sure unfinished or unsafe areas are clearly identified
  • Allow finishes to cure for the time specified by the installer

2 · Make the space safe

Separate normal dust from specialist hazards.

Accessible post-work dust can be assessed for cleaning. Suspected asbestos, hazardous chemicals, unsafe electrical work, sharps, unstable surfaces or other specialist hazards are outside an ordinary cleaning scope and should be handled by the appropriate trade.

3 · Protect new finishes

Share materials before cleaning begins.

  • Identify newly painted, sealed or treated surfaces
  • Provide manufacturer or installer care instructions where available
  • Point out delicate stone, timber, glass and metal finishes
  • Do not ask for paint, adhesive or grout removal without assessment

4 · Define the rooms and detail

Build the scope around what the work affected.

  • Walls, ledges and accessible horizontal surfaces
  • Doors, frames, skirting, switches and handles
  • Kitchens, bathrooms and fitted units in the work area
  • Floors and interior windows where safe and agreed

Unrelated rooms, inside cupboards, appliances and specialist fabric care should be named if they are required.

5 · Plan access and utilities

Keep the visit focused on cleaning.

  • Provide safe water and electricity
  • Confirm parking, keys, alarms and site contacts
  • Keep contractors out of completed cleaning areas
  • Explain any time or access restrictions before quoting

6 · Expect a final check

Fine dust can settle again.

Very fine dust can move through the property and resettle after the first pass, especially if work restarts or ventilation carries it between rooms. Inspect the agreed areas after cleaning and identify any remaining construction issue separately from the cleaning scope.
